Mount Bisoke

Mount Bisoke is situated in Volcanoes national park with its verdant Crater Lake bordering DR Cong o in the eastern Rwanda on the western branch of the great east African rift valley. Mount Bisoke whose summit is located in Rwanda is an active volcano on the virunga massifs.

Mount Bisoke is about 35 km northeast of the town of Goma and adjacent Lake kivu making the hike possible from Kigali Rwanda. Mount Bisoke is covered with lush vegetation zones ranging from Hagenia forest, through sub-alpine to alpine. It harbors a number of beautiful wildlife including: flora and fauna unique to the Virunga ranges and Albertine region of the great east African rift valley.

Mountain Bisoke is the simplest volcanic mountain to do mountaineering in the virunga massifs. The hiking adventure begin at 7:00am at the park headquarter of volcanoes national park in Kinigi RDB office with briefing and registration and the day program.

Located in volcanoes national park, Mount Bisoke is standing at an elevation of 3700m with a conic shape giving it an interesting volcano for the hikers and verdant Crater Lake. The hike takes 6 hour from the starting point to the park plus the 3 hours of descending to the end in total, the entire adventure takes 8 hours. Experienced hikers can ascend in 3 hours and descend in 1 hour making 4 hours of the adventure.

The trekking adventure start at 8:00am embark on your journey with the porter hired at the park entry point. Mount Bisoke hiking fees is USD $75 per person and the price includes the game ranger and skilled and knowledgeable guides about Rwanda safaris and protected areas.

Bisoke means soaked in water in the Swahili world, that was named by the natives regarding to the two beautiful crater lakes that ‘soak’ the volcano with water. One Crater Lake sits into the volcano peak at 100m deep and 400m of diameter and the second Crater Lake was formed at the sides, almost midway to the top, overlooking the adjacent lush slopes of the Sabinyo Volcano Mountain.

Reaching to the summit is rewarded with magnificent rare natural beautiful two Crater Lake, mountain vegetation & dropping clouds, cloudy peaks of Mountains Karisimbi and Mikeno in the Democratic Republic of Congo. It is so beautiful to see and experience this interesting hike of the volcanic mountain. The hike to the peak rewards with a view to the beautiful and giant lobelia, mountain flowers, and montane kind of forest.

Temperature average is about 10c on the sunny day, which give you at least 30mins to even picnic. Temperatures can drop to as low as 2oc on wet days and you will manage to stay barely 5 minutes. On rainy days, there are chances of finding the clouds (mist) to have dropped into the Crater Lake.
