Ngamba Island Chimpanzee Sanctuary is located in waters of Lake Victoria which takes 40-45 minutes while cruising in a boat to the destination (chimpanzee site). It is home to 49 orphaned chimpanzees rescued from across East Africa. Chimpanzee Sanctuary and Wildlife Conservation Trust, an organization responsible for all the activities of the sanctuary.
The 100 acres of land host a number of chimps and other primate species, these primates were rescued from poachers who harassed them in their natural setting. To avoid the issues of depletion of this primate species.
Wildlife Conservation Trust work together with Uganda wildlife Authority and other government bodies response for flora and fauna to market and conserve the wildlife in the area. The destination provides an exceptional opportunity to closely observe the apes in their unique setting.
Conservation education of the general Ugandan public with particularly emphasis on chimpanzees, ecotourism, community participation, capacity building through training, and building viable national, regional and international partnerships on chimpanzee conservation is the main objective.
Ngamba Island Chimpanzee Sanctuary was established in 1998 to care for the orphanage chimpanzees rescued by Uganda wildlife authority from poachers. Entrusted animals and conserving as far as ecological approach of the island is concerned. Chimpanzee Trust was established as a combination of national and international initiative and a globally recognized for the purpose of conservation of chimpanzees in their natural habitat.
Organisation activities include; welfare of individual captive chimpanzees entrusted to its care, long-term goal for the management of a sanctuary individuals that can never go back to the wild.
Ngamba Island is 23 km from Entebbe and it can be accessed by speed boat or motorized which take 2 hours to reach the site. Visitors for can opt to do half day or full day excursion depending on adventure choice, 2 day excursion at Ngamba island can also be awesome and make your trip memorable.
Chimpanzee feeding time starts from 11:00am – 02:30pm visitors are advised to arrive 30 minutes before the feeding activity to receive educational tips and the attached instructions from the trained staff.
Island activities include; chimpanzee viewing, Birding, wildlife watching, fishing, beach sports, and boat rides. The journey to Ngamba Island starts from Uganda Wildlife Education Centre where the interested parties set off from.
